ABOUT CSA & BENEFITS OF JOINING
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture (or Community Sustainable Agriculture). In other words, buying locally supports local farms and keeps green open spaces in your town.  A CSA is a collection of consumers that agree to purchase products from a local farm (or group of farms) throughout a season.  Members purchase a “share” of the farm and each week go to the farm to pick-up or, have the product delivered to their town.  It is a creative way to eat locally and reduce your carbon footing!  For the 19 weeks of the CSA you know the farmer that is producing your fruits CSAand vegetables, and how they are being farmed.

Silverbrook Farm is coordinating the Six Farms CSA. We partner with other farms to help provide the freshest, most delicious and diverse products available in our area

At the Six Farms CSA you will find old favorites as well as a unique variety of fruits and vegetables that are not usually available in any super market. Now and then we also include, herbs, local cheeses and our own eggs, honey and jams. All produce is freshly harvested on the pick-up day or the day before and displayed in the barn at Silverbrook Farm for your selection. (All shareholders except the Dartmouth location receive their shares carefully boxed in reuseable bins.)

Food is political (a great discussion for your next dinner party). Where you spend your food dollars makes a big difference to our environment and the local scenery. Spending your food dollars at super markets supports farms in California and Mexico. Spending just a fraction of those dollars locally, you support local farms AND keep them from becoming housing developments or strip malls.

Michael Pollen states in his wonderful book, The Omnivores Dilemma, that five calories of petroleum are spent to produce one calorie of food. Most of this expense comes from trucking food long distances, to your table: strawberries from Argentina? Other petro-calories come from pesticides and fertilizers used in conventional agriculture. Buying local and organically grown produce means that you are not only saving local farms but also reducing the effects of excessive petroleum use in agriculture (20% of our nations energy use!). If everyone ate one local meal a week, the USA would save 1.1 million barrels of oil a WEEK!

We promise to share your dollars with other local farms, to label products with the names of the farms they come from and to introduce the farmers to you as the season progresses. The Europeans say “Eat your view” meaning if you want local farms, you need to buy from them. Supporting local farmers means that farms and the means to produce food, will exist in your community. Coming to a farm connects old and young to the concepts of where food comes from, not just from supermarkets .
